Yes — and you’re not imagining it. When your body is working hard to cool you down, eating can drop pretty far down the priority list.
A quick note on the research: most of the detailed evidence on heat and appetite comes from military, athletes/exercise studies, and animal research — not specifically from people with MS on hot summer days. So we’re combining what we know about heat, digestion, and MS. It’s useful science, even if it isn’t a perfect one-to-one match.
Why heat messes with your appetite — starting with the part nobody mentions
People often say to "avoid hot, heavy meals" in the summer — even the VA's MS guidance recommends it. But it’s easier advice to follow when you understand the reason behind it.
Digestion creates heat. There’s even a name for this: the thermic effect of food. Basically, your body uses energy to break food down, and that process gives off heat. Protein takes the most work, which is why a big, protein-heavy meal may feel especially unappealing when you’re already overheated.
On an ordinary day, you may not notice any of this. But when it’s hot out, and your body is already trying to cool you down, a big hot meal can feel like too much. So your appetite may drop. That’s not a malfunction. It’s one of the ways your body tries to keep you safe.
A few other things can pile on:
Your body sends more blood toward your skin. That helps you cool off, but your gut may have less to work with. Food can sit heavier, digestion may slow down, and you may feel full or queasy after just a few bites.
Heat can make nausea worse. The hotter you get, the more your stomach may object.
Your hunger cues may get quieter. Some research suggests heat can shift hunger and fullness signals toward eating less. That science is still developing, but the experience is familiar to a lot of people: when you’re overheated, food just doesn’t sound good.
Why MS turns the volume up
Two features of MS can make all of this hit harder.
Your nerves may be more heat-sensitive. In MS, damaged myelin — the protective coating around nerves — can make nerve signals more vulnerable to heat. Even a small rise in body temperature can slow or briefly block those signals, temporarily making symptoms worse. This is a well-known effect calledUhthoff’s phenomenon. When heat triggers a temporary flare-up of symptoms, clinicians may call it a pseudoexacerbation— meaning it is not a sign of new nerve damage or new disease activity (Frohman et al., 2013). Symptoms usually ease as you cool back down.
Your automatic body systems may also be working harder. Your autonomic nervous system runs the things you don’t have to think about — like body temperature, blood pressure, sweating, and digestion. MS can affect this system, which is one reason gut issues like constipation or slow digestion can happen even when heat isn’t part of the picture.
When the temperature climbs, your digestion may slow down even more. Nausea can hit harder, too. It may genuinely be harder for your body than it is for someone without MS.
What food can and can't do here
Food can help. It just can’t do everything.
Eating differently in the summer may make meals easier on your body. Smaller, cooler, simpler options can reduce the burden of digestion, support hydration, protect your energy and muscle, and make it more likely that you still get real nourishment on hard days.
But food can’t stop Uhthoff’s phenomenon, cure heat sensitivity, or replace the basics of heat management: cooling, shade, air conditioning, pacing, and cooling garments.
Food is one tool, not the whole solution. Anyone promising a “cooling diet” that does more than offer comfort, hydration, and nutrition support is overselling it.
What to eat when it's too hot to eat
This isn’t a “don’t eat this” list. It’s more of a “what might actually sound tolerable when it’s blazing hot, and your stomach is not cooperating” list.
Start with small, cool meals more often. Instead of trying to force down one big meal, think in terms of little bites throughout the day: a few spoonfuls of yogurt, some fruit, a smoothie, crackers with nut butter, a boiled egg. Smaller, cooler meals are usually easier on your body than a big hot plate of food, especially when nothing sounds good. Basically: Graze with purpose.
You can also eat your water. Foods like melon, cucumber, berries, citrus, tomatoes, and yogurt can help with both hydration and nutrition. They’re not magic “cooling foods” — a cold slice of watermelon helps because it’s cold and full of water (92%!), not because it has mystical summer powers. But on days when drinking enough feels like a chore, water-rich foods can be a solid backup strategy.

When your appetite is tiny, make every bite count. This is the time to reach for foods that give you more nutrition in fewer bites: nut butter, boiled eggs, Greek yogurt, olive oil, a handful of nuts. You don’t have to eat a huge portion for it to be worthwhile. This matters even more if the heat is making you lose weight or skip meals without meaning to.
Choose soft, smooth foods when your stomach is unsettled, like smoothies, cold soups, yogurt, or blended foods. These are easier on your gut than a dense, chewy meal. Sometimes texture matters as much as temperature.
It can also help to move your bigger meals to the cooler parts of the day. If mornings and evenings are easier, eat more then and keep things lighter during the hottest stretch. This way, you're working with your body's temperature control instead of against it.
One small non-food trick: try swishing cold water in your mouth. You don’t even have to swallow it. This has been shown to improve heat tolerance in people with MS, and it’s cheap, easy, and worth trying before you head out. (Chaseling et al.)

What If Cold Makes It Worse?
For many people, cold foods and drinks are a relief: ice water, popsicles, smoothies, frozen fruit. But that advice only works if cold actually feels good to your body — and for a lot of people with MS, it doesn’t.
In one survey of 757 people with MS, 58% reacted only to heat, 29% reacted to both heat and cold, and 13% reacted to cold alone (Christogianni et al., 2022). In other words, “just have something cold” misses the mark for a lot of people.
Cold can bring its own problems: spasticity, nerve pain, or that “my whole body is tightening up” feeling. And if you have any swallowing difficulty, or dysphagia, cold or thin liquids may not just feel bad — they may be unsafe.
If cold drinks make your throat tighten or your muscles tense, try backing off to cool-but-not-icy, or even room-temperature foods that are soft and moist. Focus on cooling your room and your body — fans, shade, a damp cloth on your wrists or neck — instead of putting all the pressure on cold food or drinks.
And if swallowing feels harder than it used to — or you’re coughing, choking, or feeling like liquids “go down the wrong way” — please share that with your care team. They may bring in a speech-language pathologist to help you find safer, easier options. You don’t have to troubleshoot swallowing issues alone.
If you're losing weight this summer
If the heat has been killing your appetite for weeks and your weight is dropping, don’t just brush it off. When you don’t get enough food for long enough, your body can start losing muscle — and with MS, muscle is something you want to protect. It supports strength, balance, and day-to-day function.
This isn’t about chasing a certain number on the scale. It’s about noticing unintentional weight loss and sharing that information with your care team.
The answer still isn’t to force down big meals that feel impossible. The goal is to get more nourishment in ways your body can actually tolerate — small, cool, nutrient-dense options like the ones above — and to let your care team know if the weight loss continues.
When it's more than the heat
Most of the time, heat-triggered MS symptoms are temporary. They show up when your body gets too warm and ease once you cool down, often within 24 hours. That’s usually a pseudoexacerbation — uncomfortable, but not a sign of new nerve damage.
Still, not everything should be blamed on heat. If symptoms are new, clearly worse, last more than 24 hours, or don’t improve after cooling down, call your MS team.
Call them, too, if you have a fever. Heat and infection can look similar from the outside, but an infection may need treatment.
And if you have signs of heat exhaustion — confusion, a racing heart, dizziness, or ongoing nausea or vomiting — don’t wait it out. Get urgent help.
This isn’t about alarming you. It’s about giving you a clear line for when to ask for backup.
